The Silver Winds Flute Choir will present a free concert, "Joyful December," on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church on Market Street in downtown Warren. This program will usher in the holiday season with selections of classical and contemporary flute choir music as well as seasonal selections and traditional carols. Familiar pieces from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and Handel's Messiah are programmed along with We Three Kings, Greensleeves, Good King Wenceslas, Pat a Pan and Joy to the World.
The Silver Winds Flute Choir is an ensemble of seven flutists from Warren, Russell, Youngsville and surrounding areas. This group grew from a core group of five musicians that began playing together six years ago. The group size has fluctuated over time with up to 10 members. The full complement of flutists allows the choir to perform a wide range of styles represented in the flute choir repertoire while utilizing the C flute, piccolo, alto and bass flutes.
Musicians of the choir are skilled amateurs, professionals and teachers all sharing a love of flute music. The musical experiences of the flutists include performances both past and present in the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Flute Choir of Atlanta, Atlanta Flute Ensemble, Gannon University Adult Flute Choir, City Flutes of Pittsburgh, Triumphant Swing Band, Presque Isle Flute Choir, Warren Civic Orchestra, Marietta Symphony on the Square (GA), Warren Players theater orchestra, Light Strings and Air (flute and guitar) and small ensembles in local venues at weddings and receptions.
