Theatre’s former trustees, executive directors honored

November 19, 2012
By BRIAN FERRY (bferry@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Without the support and efforts of those who went before, the Struthers Library Theatre would not be in the position it is today.

The current trustees and staff are honoring the theater's executive directors and trustees since the 1983 centennial.

In October, the past officials were invited to a gathering which they were surprised to discover was in their honor. "We had a reception for all the former trustees of the theater since 1983," Executive Director Marcy O'Brien said on Friday. "We thought it was right to honor them. If these people hadn't kept it alive and kept it going, we couldn't be doing what we are doing."

Bob Priest, Struthers Library Theatre facility manager, places new bricks commemorating trustees from 1983 to the present. The names of the trustees can be found near the east exit of the theatre, on Liberty Street.

As a more lasting tribute, commemorative bricks with each of the trustees' and directors' names were installed in the sidewalk outside the theater.

The board of trustees, according to the deed of Thomas Struthers, consists of seven members, one of whom is the president judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Warren County.

Former trustees who attended the reception included William L. Jones, Ann Mead, the Honorable Paul Millin, David Winans, the Honorable Robert Wolfe, Chase Putnam, Robert Dietsch, the Honorable William Morgan, and Robert Kaemmerer.

Trustees who were unable to attend were Gerald Huber, Edgar Robertson, and John Haggerty.

Former executive directors Charles Tranter (1987-2002) and Maurice Cashman (2004-2007) were honored at the ceremony.

Commemorative bricks were placed for all of the above trustees and directors, as well as deceased trustees Sally Sokolski, Quinn Smith, and W. Scott Calderwood.

The bricks were placed near the Liberty Street door.

The current trustees are president Mark Phillips, vice president Ellen Paquette, secretary/treasurer Robert Crowley, the Honorable Maureen Skerda, Dr. Paul Boger, Dr. John John, and Andrew Sokolski.
