Artist Kim Slocum of Warren County has an oil painting, "Thunderhooves" on display now at Mercyhurst University's Cummings Art Gallery.
Hers is among works by 32 members of the Northwest Pennsylvania Artist Association (NPAA) Invitational Exhibit: Freedom, a diverse exhibit including works in watercolor, oil paintings, photography, sculpture, fiber arts and jewelry. The NPAA works to promote the visual arts in the tri-county community, organizes several annual exhibits and raises funds to provide college scholarships for talented high school art students. Daniel Burke, chair of Mercyhurst's Art Department, was a founding member of NPAA in 1974. Members of the association were invited to create works inspired by Mercyhurst's academic theme for 2012-2013, Freedom.
Many of the works include patriotic images like the American flag and the colors, red, white and blue. Other works comment on religious and political freedoms. Animal imagery and the sense of flight can also be found in the exhibit. Carol Posch Comstock's "Release," archival photo with colored pencil on cotton, shows birds in flight, while Slocum's oil painting "Thunderhooves" captures the spirit of wild horses.

The public is invited to meet and greet the artists during a reception Thursday, Nov. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit will continue through Dec. 2.
Cummings Art Gallery is located in the lobby of the Mary D'Angelo Performing Arts Center at Mercyhurst. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday & Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
