Boys learn about flying

November 2, 2012
The Times Observer

Ten members of Boy Scout Troop 8 recently participated in an Aviation Merit Badge class at the Brokenstraw Airport. The boys were all able to receive five hours worth of documented ground school training that can used toward pilot certification. Covered topics included: pilot certification, aerodynamics, pre-flight inspection, power plants, airport layout and operations, and basic instrumentation, communication and navigation. John Terassi of Luftladder Air Charter opened his hanger up to the boys to allow them to climb in the Cessna airplanes for hands on inspections and operations. They also toured the maintenance and glider hangers, where each of the boys climbed into the Super Blanik glider, used by the Brokenstraw Soaring Club.
