Humility

October 31, 2012
The Times Observer

Dear editor:

This November will be the 12th presidential election I have had the privilege of participating in since I was eligible to vote. In my lifetime I have been able to watch some spirited debates beginning with Kennedy-Nixon in 1960 up to Obama-Romney today. Up until this year I always thought that no-matter which candidate was elected they had this countries best interest at heart.

This year I believe we as a nation are at a tipping point and our very survival could very well rest on this election. Before he became president Abraham Lincoln made a speech where he expressed his concerns about the raising tensions between the North and South about the issue of slavery. In the speech he said, "a house divided against its self cannot stand."

The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence; from bondage to spiritual faith; to great courage; to liberty; to abundance; to complacency; to apathy; to dependence; then back into bondage.

Somewhere between abundance and complacency we stopped honoring the God of Abraham for the abundances and freedoms we were enjoying. As we went deeper into a spirit of complacency we began to throw God out of everything in our society. As we threw God out moral decay began to set in and in a few short years fueled by an ever-increasing drug/alcohol addicted society we're head downhill towards a spirit of apathy and dependency.

With dependency now arriving we have 47% of the people who pay no taxes, there are millions on welfare, un-employment and food stamps and the nation is trillions in debt. Sadly there are far to many that are putting their faith in man to fix the mess that man has made.

If we desire to fix this downward spirial it must begin with the believers of the God of Abraham, for his word says; "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

I have never seen such a prayer initiative before an election as this year, so fellow believers remember we have a choice, what will it be - Humility or Humiliation?
