FOOTBALL: Sheffield loses 4th straight

October 29, 2012
By BEN OVIATT (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Curwensville played spoiler on Saturday, defeating the Wolverines, 50-28, on a rain-soaked Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Sheffield High School.

The Tide came out strong, punching in a three-yard run for the game's first score, but Sheffield was able to answer at the start of the second quarter. Brandon Johnston found the end zone from two yards out to pull the Wolverines within a single point.

Curwensville struck twice more before the half to pull away on runs from Zach Tibbens and Brad Coudriet. Tibbens finished the day leading all rushers with 154 yards on 14 carries and three touchdowns. Teammate Josh Greslick also broke the 100-yard mark with 104 yards on 11 carries as part of a 384-yard Golden Tide ground attack.

Looking to come out throwing in the third quarter, Sheffield turned to sophomore Adam Higby, who rewarded coach Dave Fitch with a perfect four-of-four drive that capped with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dylan McNeal. But three more Curwensville scores widened the deficit.

With senior quarterback Shequan Wright back at the helm, the Wolverines made a push with a nine-yard connection between Wright and fellow senior Tyler Fitzgerald and a two-yard run from Wright to cut into the lead.

The Wolverine defense shut out Curwensville in the fourth quarter, but the damage had been done and the District 9 playoff-bound Tide (7-2) escaped with the win.

Wright finished the game nine of 18 passing for 148 yards and a touchdown, and Fitzgerald led all receivers with 79 yards on four catches.

Sheffield (2-7) will look to send its seniors off with a win next Friday night, when they visit county rival Youngsville for a showdown at Mike Shine Field.
