SMETHPORT - Sheffield has learned the hard way that mistakes come back to haunt you.
The Wolverines gave up two 65-yard touchdown passes on plays in which they had a chance to sack the quarterback, and fell to Smethport, 21-3, Friday at Smethport High School.
Sheffield struck first early in the second quarter. After blocking a Smethport punt late in the first, Sheffield drove inside the 20, where Shaquan Wright knocked a 30-yard field goal straight through the uprights.
The Hubbers answered back with just under two minutes to play in the half. Quarterback Clay Schuler scrambled around in the backfield, somehow managing to avoid being taken down, and found a wide-open Ryan Corbett downfield for a 65-yard score.
Sheffield had a chance to regain the lead early in the fourth, driving down to the Hubbers 5-yard line, but fell short on fourth down. Smethport took advantage when Schuler and Corbett hooked up again on a play that was almost identical to their first connection to take a 14-3 lead.
Corbett hauled in his third touchdown of the game with just over two minutes remaining on a seven-yard reception.
"It's always hard to lose on two plays," Sheffield head coach Dave Fitch said. "We just had mental lapses. We weren't able to sack him and we allowed him to roll out and find a man downfield. We covered it at halftime and we still allowed him to do it again. We're making too many mistakes. It's not a talent issue. If we could put together a game where we cut down on our mistakes we would win."
Wright finished with 69 rushing yards while Tyler Fitzgerald added 47 and Brandon Johnston had 49. Wright did not complete a pass in four attempts while Adam Higby finished 3-of-9 with 55 yards. Each quarterback threw an interception.
Penalties also hurt the Wolverines, as they committed 10 for a total of 89 yards.
Sheffield will look to snap its three game losing streak when it takes on Curwensville at home on Saturday.
