Firemen filling boots for MDA

October 19, 2012
By JACOB PERRYMAN (jperryman@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

The four-way stop at the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave. and Liberty St. will provide the setting for more than just traffic delays and driver confusion on Friday.

The Warren Firefighters' Union Local 1835 is taking advantage of the fact every car must stop at the intersection to raise money for a pair of worthy causes.

The union will be on-site with traffic cones and signs Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. asking motorists to pay a voluntary "toll" donation and selling t-shirts.

Shawn Jones (left) and Chris Whyte (right) showed off breast cancer awareness t-shirts and Boot Drive for MDA signage in preparation for a “toll” donation event at the intersection of Pennsylvania Ave. and Liberty St. on Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The "toll" is a part of the union's annual Boot Day for MDA where the group fills an actual boot with donations to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

According to event organizer Shawn Jones, all proceeds from the boot drive are used locally and will directly benefit 25 families within Warren County.

The boot drive has been raising more money every year, Jones noted.

"It's actually been increasing," Jones said. "Last year we made over $4,000. People have been more than generous when it comes to helping people in the area with MDA."

During the boot drive, breast cancer awareness t-shirts will also be available.

Proceeds from shirt sales will also be kept locally. Funds from the sales will be donated to the Cancer Care Center at Warren General Hospital.

T-shirts will be available in pink and black. Small, medium, large and extra-large shirts will cost $20, 2XL shirts will cost $21 and 3XL shirts will cost $22.

Anyone interested in a shirt who will not be driving through the "toll" intersection can call the Warren Fire Department at 723-8110 and ask for Chris Whyte.
