VOLLEYBALL: School spirit: Students cheer on Sheffield during rare Monday matinee

October 16, 2012
The Times Observer

Sheffield's volleyball team fed off the energy of a raucous home crowd, but it wasn't enough to lift the Wolverines to their second victory of the season during a 3-1 loss to Brockway during Monday's pep assembly afternoon volleyball match at Sheffield Area High School.

Brockway won the opening two sets 25-21 and 25-15 before Sheffield rallied to win set three, 25-15. The Wolverines fought hard in the final set of the match eventually falling 25-27 to the Rovers.

"I don't think we played badly," said Sheffield coach Tracey Vile. "We passed well and were quicker than usual on defense."

The pep assembly was attended by all Sheffield students and created a unique atmosphere not seen in most volleyball matches.

"The crowd definitely helped," added Vile. "I think it fired the girls up a little bit."

Abby Labesky had nine service points and eight kills for the Wolverines. Brandy Rockwell added 12 kills and Hannah Vile finished with 26 assists.

Sheffield's junior varsity team was defeated in two sets, 8-25, 24-26.

No junior varsity stats were available.

The Wolverines won't have to wait long to bounce back as they travel to Kane Tuesday night for a league match. The remaining schedule for Sheffield also includes matches with Elk County Catholic, Ridgway and county rival Eisenhower.
