FOOTBALL: Like a broken record: Port’s Bodamer has record day in win over Sheffield

October 15, 2012

It was a record-setting Saturday afternoon at Sheffield High School.

Unfortunately, it was the Wolverines who found themselves on the wrong end of those records, as they dropped a 69-30 decision to Port Allegany.

Port's senior quarterback Matt Bodamer became the new Pennsylvania record-holder in career passing touchdowns with 120, and became only the third high school quarterback in the state to pass for more than 9,000 yards. He finished the day, unofficially, completing 19-of-26 passing attempts for 292 yards and four touchdowns.

Bodamer's primary target, Tyce Miller, became the new District 9 career record-holder in both receiving touchdowns (31) and receiving yards. Miller racked up 175 on nine catches Saturday, and hauled in three of Bodamer's four touchdowns.

"It's not just one guy; they have five weapons and if you take one away there are other guys who can step up," said Sheffield coach Dave Fitch. "It's tough to beat perfection, and their offense is firing on all cylinders."

The Wolverines didn't have to wait long to get a look at the high-powered Port Allegany offense as the Gators opened the game scoring the first two touchdowns on a one-yard run from Bodamer and a 25-yard connection between Bodamer and Miller.

Ironically, Sheffield's first touchdown also came on a pass from Bodamer. Bodamer was intercepted by senior Tony Burt, who took the play 75 yards for a score to make it a one possession game.

Port would answer quickly with two more Bodamer touchdown passes, one tying the state record and another breaking it, and two rushing touchdowns from Trent Neal and Nick Budd.

It looked as if Sheffield may make a run when Shequan Wright threw a deep 65-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Winslow; that score was immediately matched with Bodamer's own 65-yard toss to Miller.

Three more Port touchdowns put the game out of reach, but the Wolverines refused to go quietly. Sheffield scored 16 points and outscored Port in the fourth quarter. Wright found Brandon Johnston for his second touchdown pass of the day and Mister Ussery intercepted a pass from the Gators second-string quarterback and brought it back 52 yards into the end zone. Wright successfully ran for a two-point conversion after both scores.

If Bodamer's big day through the air wasn't enough, he also ran for 115 yards on seven carries and returned two interceptions for touchdowns, giving him seven total for the afternoon.

Wright completed six of his 13 pass attempts for 146 yards and two scores to lead the Wolverines, who drop to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the AML North.
