Our opinion: Jackson film

October 12, 2012
The Times Observer

For anyone looking for something to do tonight, Struthers Library Theatre is offering a unique opportunity.

A film entitled 'Liberty under Law' will debut at the Struthers Liberty Theatre, featuring a panel discussion at 7 p.m. before the film showing at 8 p.m.

The film is touted as the first feature-length documentary to explore the life and legacy of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, who was born in Spring Creek.

The panel discussion is made up of heavy-hitters with robust knowledge of Jackson's life and legacy.

Jackson's last Supreme Court law clerk, Barrett Prettyman, who also negotiated directly with Cuban leader Fidel Castro on behalf of the Kennedy administration after the Bay of Pigs invasion, will be on the panel along with former chief prosecutor for the Special Court of Sierra Leone David Crane, Jackson biographer John Q. Barrett, and Jackson's grandson, Thomas Loftus.

The discussion will serve as a launching point that introduces and explains pivotal points in Jackson's life, as well as his contributions to national and international law.

The Nuremberg Trials, at which Jackson was the chief prosecutor, were the first proceedings designed specifically to prosecute war crimes. The model developed for the prosecution of such crimes, while being ahead of its time, has also been mirrored in other war crimes hearings throughout the world over the last 70 years.

If you're a history buff or want to learn more about a prominent Warren County native, then this is a must-see event.

Thanks to a generous gift by United Refining Co., which bought the house out, admission is free to both events. Whirley DrinkWorks! and PNC Bank are also sponsoring the event.
