JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Running against three New York-state schools, the Eisenhower boys cross country team emerged with a first-place finish Tuesday at the Jamestown Audubon Society.
The Knights' score of 29 was lower than the 37 of Frewsburg, the 69 of Allegany-Limestone and the incomplete score of Silver Creek. The Ike girls' team score was incomplete due to the team having only four varsity runners.
Ike coach Darlene Beach said the Knights competed against many of these same runners at the Red Dragon Invitational earlier this year and the meet allowed some valuable course time between now and the start of the cross country postseason on October 20.
Ike senior Anthony Amroski was victorious in the boys race, pulling away from teammate Devin VanGuilder and Allegany-Limestone's Owen Barber in the event's closing stages. Amroski's winning time on the three-mile course was 16:50 and Barber and VanGuilder finished in a virtual tie for second. Barber was credited with second and VanGuilder took third.
With the boys team missing Ben Perkins and Jacob McCool because of a boys soccer match, Matt Jewell stepped up to run third for the Knights on Tuesday. Jewell placed sixth overall in a time of 18:52. Rounding out the Knights lineup were Ben Morrison (10th, 19:07), Derek Lasecki (13th, 19:50), Levi Stanko (18th, 20:54), Jason Morine (20th, 21:17) and Jacob Hoffman (26th, 23:29).
Julia Bauer ran a strong third for the Lady Knights in the girls event, finishing in 21:05. She was the lone Eisenhower runner to finish among the top 13 finishers.
Teammates Lacey Stanko and Kate Daugharthy ran together for the entire event and were credited with 14th and 15th overall. Stanko finished in 23:57 with Daugharthy just one second back. Grace Thompson was the final Ike runner to cross the line, claiming 18th in 25:05.
The Knights runners are off until the Region Cross Country Championships scheduled for Saturday, October 20, in Union City.
