PREP GOLF: Seasons end for Dragon golfers at D-10

October 10, 2012
The Times Observer

GROVE CITY - A pair of young Warren golfers concluded an outstanding season Tuesday at the District 10 Class AAA Golf Championships at the Grove City Country Club.

Dragons sophomore Nathan Sandberg and freshman Andrew Gignac both fared well during the event, but failed to advance to Monday's PIAA Class AAA West Regional at Tom's Run Golf Course in Blairsville.

Sandberg finished among the top ten with a strong score of 85 while Gignac finished his first season with a strong 92. Gignac was one of just two freshmen to qualify for the Class AAA tournament.

Slippery Rock's Brett Rinker pulled away late to claim the D-10 Class AAA title. Rinker won by three shots over Strong Vincent's John Fosco.

Both golfers will compete at Monday's event in Blairsville.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS - Morgan Smith's fine golf career for the Warren Dragons came to a close Tuesday with a strong fourth-place finish at the District 10 Class AAA Golf Championships at Cambridge Springs' Riverside Golf Club.

Smith, a senior, trailed only D-10 champion Megan Kaverman of McDowell, Kaverman's teammate Ellen Eighmy and Meadville's Lacey Latta in the final standings. Kaverman won with an 84 and Eighmy also advanced to Monday's PIAA West Regional in Blairsville. Smith's 95 was seven strokes away from advancing.

Also competing for Warren on Monday was sophomore Megan Smoulder. Smoulder carded a 100 through 18 holes and finished sixth in the 12-person field.

"In golf, the only thing harder than preparing to win is winning itself," said Warren girls golf coach Tom Smoulder. "However, the effort my girls made over the past few weeks deserves my praise and congratulations on a battle well fought. Morgan will be greatly missed and Meggie has it in her for the next two years."
