VOLLEYBALL: Wolverines reach semis of own volleyball tournament

October 8, 2012
The Times Observer

Three county volleyball teams participated in the Sheffield Volleyball Tournament Saturday at Sheffield Area High School.

Two of the three county teams in attendance - host Sheffield and Youngsville - qualified for the playoffs during the event. In fact, the Wolverines and Eagles met in the opening round of the afternoon playoff session with the Wolverines earning the win to advance to the tournament semifinals.

There, Sheffield lost to Cranberry who itself would go on to lose in the finals to tournament champion Port Allegany.

Despite the loss in the semifinals, Sheffield coach Tracie Vile was pleased with the effort put forth by her squad.

"My girls played extremely well all day long," said Vile. "To tell you the truth, it was a very good tournament for us."

Individual stats for Sheffield were not provided to the Times Observer.

Bev Fox's Youngsville Eagles qualified for the playoffs after finishing a strong 7-5 in pool play. The playoffs would prove to be a one and done, however, with the loss to the tournament hosts.

Judi Lewis paced the Eagles effort with 21 digs and 26 service points. Abbey McLaughlin finished with 10 kills and 27 service points of her own. Also contributing for the Eagles were Kennedy Cratty with 30 digs, 12 kills, 22 service points and six blocks, Aubree Hendrickson with 25 assists and 14 service points and Karissa Cratty with 29 digs, 20 service points and a pair of blocks and kills.

Results for Eisenhower were not available at press time.

Sheffield returns to action Tuesday, hosting Bradford and Youngsville travels to Union City that same night. The Knights travel to Rocky Grove on Tuesday.
