College news
Warren Area High School graduate and Division II Mercyhurst University football player T.J. Latimer, a redshirt freshman, was recently recognized by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) as the conference's Defensive Player of the Week.
Latimer, seeing his most significant action of the season, led the Lakers with five solo stops in Saturday's 36-10 victory over Cheyney. He also blocked a Wolves' punt midway through the third quarter which resulted in a safety - the first by Mercyhurst since an August 27, 2005, game against Gannon. The safety put Mercyhurst ahead, 22-10, midway through the third quarter.
The linebacker is the son of former Mercyhurst great Greg Latimer, who played linebacker from 1984-88. Greg was inducted into the Mercyhurst Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and still ranks third in school history with 339 career tackles. Greg's brother Tim (1981-84) also was a star for the Lakers in the early stages of the program and ranks seventh in school history with 313 tackles. He's in the Mercyhurst Football Hall of Fame.
Latimer and the Lakers play at home Saturday, hosting Lock Haven at Tullio Field. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
Jr. high hoops
Beaty's eighth-graders defeated Youngsville, 23-8, on Thursday at Beaty Warren Middle School. Rachel Wilson led Beaty with eight points, Maddie Loutzenhiser added five, Bailey Hoffman four, Megan Wortman two, and Lyndsey Goldthwaite and Rachel Cecco one each. For Youngsville, Alison Ishman and Autumn Hultberg scored four each.
Youngsville defeated Beaty, 34-21, in the seventh-grade girls game. For Youngsville, Hultberg led with 12 points, Paige Minweaser 10, Maddie Cratty eight, and Caitlin Craig four. For Beaty, Abby Bouchard had five points, Jessie Sweigart, Jayden Kendricks and Chelsea Wees four each, and Logan Hammond and Haley Justice two each.

Kane swept a pair of junior high girls basketball games from Eisenhower on Thursday. In the eighth-grade game, Kane bested the Knights, 40-10. Kearsten Baran led the Knights with eight points and Alicia Straight added two points.
Kane won the seventh-grade contest, 42-12. Payton Mineweaser scored eight points and Hailey Spicer and Savannah McKown added two points each. The Knights return to action Saturday, visiting Tidioute.
Jr. high football
Outside linebacker Dawson Fredrick intercepted a pass and returned it 29 yards for a score, and Levi Wooten ran in the two-point conversion, as Sheffield defeated Beaty in a seventh-grade junior high football game on Thursday at Sheffield High School.
Sheffield quarterback Drew Higby had a 53-yard touchdown pass to tight end Austin Simmer earlier, and Wooten added a 37-yard touchdown run on an off-tackle play to help tie things up at 14-14 late in the third quarter. Simmer caught the two-point conversion pass from Higby.
For Beaty, Matt Leonard's 64-yard pass to Eliot Gross to the Sheffield 3-yard line set up a Tyler Mahood TD reception from Leonard in the first quarter. Seth Harrington kicked the extra point.
Beaty led 14-6 in the second quarter when Gross intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for the touchdown. Harrington again kicked the extra point.
Mason Albaugh, Cameron Retterer, and Wooten were standouts on defense for Sheffield, and Harrington, Gross, Ryan Munksgard, and Andrew Davidson for Warren.
