Dorothy J. Howell, 86, of Pittsfield, Pa., passed away on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at her home.

She was born on September 10, 1926 in New Lebanon, Pa., a daughter to the late Frank Moore and Mabel "Harrison" Slater. Dorothy married her loving husband, Merle Howell, on August 19, 1944 in Columbia, South Carolina before settling in Pittsfield. Dorothy was a member of the Garland Presbyterian Church. In her earlier years, Dorothy enjoyed bowling and she also enjoyed quilting, flowers, and her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children Tim (Bobbie) Howell of Pittsfield, Trudy (Larry) Helfast of Spartansburg, Pa., and Susan Mack of Pittsfield; a sister Arlene Waters of Garland, and a stepsister Nancy Seymur of Columbus Pa.; many grandchildren, great grandchildren , great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her children, James Howell, Nancy Howell, an infant Robert Joseph Howell, 3 sisters, Clara Orr, Gladys Hodak, and Betty Rankin, and a brother, George Thomas.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday October 6th, at the Nelson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 314 North Main St. in Youngsville, from 11am to 1pm, at which time a funeral service will be held with Tim Olsen, lay pastor of the Garland Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to be made to the Garland Presbyterian Church, Box 95 Garland, Pa., 16416. Econdolences may be made at nelsonfuneral home.net.
