GOP committee events scheduled

The Warren County Republican Committee has launched extensive fall 2012 campaign efforts on behalf of all Republican candidates.

Leading the ticket this fall is presidential candidate Mitt Romney with his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, and U.S. Senate candidate, Tom Smith.

For several weeks, a corps of Republican Committee members have met and mapped out a local strategy that will include extensive door-to-door voter contact, get-out-the-vote efforts, yard sign distribution, and other measures that will ensure that the ticket headed by Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan carries Warren County decisively.

Beginning immediately, Campaign Headquarters located at 145 Conewango Avenue will be open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. All voters are welcome to stop in to pick up campaign yard signs and literature and to volunteer for campaign activities.

On Saturday a Fall Campaign Rally will be held at the Warren Holiday Inn at 10:30 a.m. A free brunch will be served and the public is invited and welcome. No reservations are needed.

A special address will be given by State Rep. Daryl Metcalf, chair of the House State Government Committee, regarding Pennsylvania's Voter I.D. Law. Metcalfe is one of the legislative architects of the new law.

David Fike, a senior campaign strategist from the Pennsylvania Romney/Ryan campaign will give an exclusive campaign briefing.

Corbett leans against appeal

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Tom Corbett says he's leaning against appealing a judge's ruling to postpone the enforcement of Pennsylvania's new voter identification requirement until after the presidential election.

Corbett said Tuesday that no final decision had been made.

The 6-month-old law requires each voter to show a valid photo ID and is a signature accomplishment of Corbett and his fellow Republicans who control the state Legislature.

Democrats opposed the law, saying it could keep the elderly, poor, young adults and minorities from voting.

DA says UPMC improving security PITTSBURGH (AP) - A district attorney says the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is making security improvements that mirror those he's recommended since one worker was killed and five others were wounded by a mentally ill gunman at a psychiatric hospital.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. says he's still using a grand jury to investigate whether anyone might be criminally liable for not preventing the March 8 shooting at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Police rescue exhausted suspect

TRAFFORD, Pa. (AP) - Police say they had to rescue an alleged burglar who hid in the western Pennsylvania woods and became exhausted.

Authorities say 24-year-old Benjamin Staab attempted to break into a house about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh on Tuesday morning at about 7:30 a.m. He then fled into nearby woods.

Police searched the area and found Staab, but he was "physically exhausted" and unable to walk out of the thick woods. A rescue team and volunteer fire departments cleared a path, strapped Staab to a rescue dolly, and pulled him up a hill.

Staab was taken for a medical exam and then to the local jail, where he was unable to post $25,000 bond.
