Volleyball

Warren County Christian School's volleyball team is 10-0 after a sweep of French Creek Valley Christian, 25-10, 25-9, 25-8, on Friday at WCCS.

WCCS is starting to play New Penn Christian Conference opponents a second time, including the French Creek win on Friday, at Jamestown Bethel Tuesday, and hosting Erie First on Friday.

Dymphee Zortman had 11 service points, six aces and five kills for WCCS; Allyssa Kerr 20 points, 11 aces and five kills; Kaitlin Weidner six points, four aces, three kills and 10 assists; Whitney Poindexter eight points and four aces, and; Hannah Cox three points.

D-9 honors

Sheffield quarterback Shequan Wright has been named the D9sports.com District 9 player of the week for the fifth week of the 2012 football season. Wright had a monster game for Sheffield in the Wolverines' 31-30 Homecoming victory over Coudersport on Saturday.

In helping Sheffield beat Coudersport for the first time since 1973, Wright was 11-of-21 passing for 200 yards with two touchdowns.

In addition, he caught three passes for 85 yards and two more touchdowns. Wright's 55-yard pass on a wide receiver option on fourth and 19 from his own 33 late in the game helped set up the winning touchdown.

In addition to Wright, teammates Adam Higby and Brendan Winslow were named to the week five honor roll. Higby was 8-of-14 for 131 yards with three touchdowns, including the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining.

Winslow had six catches for 102 yards with a touchdown and added an interception on defense. Winslow recovered the game's final kickoff to seal the win. Winslow caught the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds left after catching a 55-yard pass on fourth and 19 to help set up the score.

College news

Eisenhower High School graduate and Pitt-Bradford women's cross country team member Carly Kirkpatrick finished 44th for the Lady Panthers at the Mount Aloysius Invitational on Sunday. Kirkpatrick and the Lady Panthers return to action Saturday, October 13, at the Geneva Invitational.

Jr. high hoops

Youngsville swept a pair of junior high girls basketball games from Eisenhower Monday at Eisenhower High School. In the eighth-grade game, Youngsville topped Eisenhower, 24-17. Kathy Sveda led the Eagles with six points, Alison Ishman, Madison Fehlman, Julia Bailey and Hanna Bullard scored four points each and Autumn Hultberg scored two.

Joni Zortman led the Knights with seven points, Alicia Straight and Kearsten Baran added four points each and Tiffany Work added two markers.

Youngsville was a 46-18 winner in the seventh-grade game. Hultberg led the winners with 18 points and Maddie Cratty joined her in double figures with 10. Paige Mineweaser scored eight points, Abby Carr finished with six, Caitlin Craig scored four points and Sam Wilkinson scored two.

For the Knights, Peyton Mineweaser, Anna Carlton and Savannah McKown finished with four points each and Hailey Spicer, Sammy Shelton and Miranda Garris chipped in two points each.

Eisenhower is at Kane on Thursday.

Time change

The Johnsonburg at Sheffield junior high girls basketball game will begin at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sheffield Area High School.
