WATTSBURG - Warren's girls cross country team ran to a sweep - including a close win over region opponent Youngsville - during a cross country tri-meet with the Eagles and Seneca Tuesday at Seneca Area High School.
Warren defeated Youngsville, 26-29 and Seneca, 15-50. In addition to Warren's sweep, the Lady Eagles picked up a 15-50 victory over Seneca.
In boys competition, Youngsville defeated Warren, 20-38 and lost to Seneca 16-46 while the Dragons were on the losing end of a sweep.
On a difficult course, Warren senior Ellis Beardsley ran to victory in the girls race, finishing in 22:48. An all-county top five also featured Youngsville's Kellie Lindstrom (23:08) in second and Abbie Swartzbaugh (23:30) in fourth and Warren's Anna Falvo (23:16) in third and Amanda Castagnino (23:49) in fifth.
Also finishing strong for the Lady Dragons were Deanna Hahn in seventh with a run of 24:23 and Alyssa Cumberland in 11th with a run of 25:33.
Youngsville's deep and talented lineup got top-ten runs from standouts Katelyn Maille, Piper Olsen and Mallory Eastman. Maille was sixth in 24:04, Olsen was eighth in 24:30 and Eastman was ninth in 24:49.
Rounding out Youngsville's girls lineup were Lydia Swartzbaugh (12th, 25:57), Denise Devore (13th, 27:09), Samantha Tome (14th, 27:57) and Suzie Rose (17th, 33:33).
"Kellie led Ellis through about two miles of the race before Ellis made her move and ultimately pulled away on the hill in mile three to finish 20 seconds ahead," said Youngsville coach Ray Bennett. "Literally every place was a battle between the two teams. Regions will be a lot of fun."
While the Warren boys team suffered a pair of setbacks, Christian Olson was the team's standout of the day. Olson ran his best race of the year narrowly missing out on the victory by finishing second in 20:06.
Seth Johnson was next across the line for Warren, finishing 15th in 21:46 and Max Pierson was 17th in 21:51. Eric Zavinski (18th, 22:00), Daniel Pierson (20th, 22:21) and Mark Reiff (21st, 22:29) also were strong for the Dragons.
Youngsville's top male finisher was freshman Bobby Bower who was a strong sixth in 20:42. Aaron Hoover was eighth in 20:46 and Zach Ishman came home 10th in 21:08. Gregg Yost (13th, 21:33) and Andy Lalwani (14th, 21:40) were the final scored runners for the Eagles.
Also competing for Youngsville on Tuesday were Collin Lehnen (16th, 21:48), Nathen Carr (22nd, 22:32), Ben Stover (23rd, 23:09) and Collin Alekson (24th, 24:08).
"All in all, the boys showed real strength tonight," said Bennett. "The Seneca boys wanted to take control of the race early, but Hoover kept the lead at the mile mark and didn't break with the first pack until most of the way through the second mile."
Warren's boys (0-6) and girls (5-1) are back in action Tuesday, hosting Union City and Harbor Creek. Youngsville's boys (1-7) and girls (5-3) return to the course Tuesday at Oil City.
