Warren veteran Walter Simpson has been appointed to serve on the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home Advisory Council following a Sept. 12 announcement by Gov. Tom Corbett.
Simpson will join Warren County residents Ed Burris and Gary Fry on the council, which helps oversee operations of the home in Erie.
Simpson's resume in regards to veterans issues includes stints as a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 75 Commander, a DAV State Line Officer and a Local Veterans' Employment Representative through Pennsylvania CareerLink. He currently serves as Pennsylvania DAV 2nd Vice Commander.
He is a 2009 recipient of the Pennsylvania DAV Commanders Award for his work in assisting veterans in finding employment.
"It's an honor to be selected and appointed," Simpson said. "I was pretty proud that I was nominated. I will carry through that position until I am replaced."
The home is one of Pennsylvania's six state-run care facilities. Soldiers and Sailors provides assisted living care for armed service veterans including varying levels of personal care, a Dementia/Alzheimer's unit and a 24-hour care nursing unit.
"It's pretty cut and dried because it's the most well run (care facility) I've ever seen," Simpson said. "You can't ask for a better group of veterans than the guys from Soldiers and Sailors Home. For me, knowing a lot of those guys, it's an honor."
