GUYS MILLS - Youngsville battled back from an early deficit, but ultimately lost its second straight region game, 20-14, on Friday at Maplewood.
"We missed tackles and gave up big plays," said Youngsville coach Luke Alex. "We lack consistency and need to work on that."
The Eagles got into trouble early after fumbling on their first offensive snap. Tigers' quarterback Nate Klingler made them pay, faking a handoff before carrying the ball 10 yards into the end zone for the early lead.
After forcing a quick three-and-out, Maplewood added a second touchdown. Ethan Moody ran in from four yards out. That's a ball carrier Youngsville would see often.
Youngsville had two touchdowns negated on its next possession before finally getting on the board. A 63-yard run from Rocco Gatta was brought back due to a holding call. A 70-yard reception for T.J. Hardy was brough back for a block in the back on the very next play. The Eagles closed to 14-7 when Gatta finally reached the end zone on a 34-yard run.
"Jordan (Gurdak) had a nice game defensively, and Rocco had a lot of huge plays," said Alex.
In the second quarter, Youngsville evened it up when quarterback Jake Lauffenburger ran 68 yards for a touchdown.
Both teams failed to muster any offense in the third quarter. The Tigers eventually took the lead back for good early in the fourth. Piling on the yards, Moody ran it in from 38 yards for his second touchdown. He finished with 271 yards - of his team's 315 - on 29 carries.
The Eagles had one final chance in the closing minutes, driving to the Maplewood 30-yard line.
Lauffenburger was eventually sacked on fourth down. He finished with 98 rushing yards on 18 carries to go with 117 yards passing.
Gatta had 78 rushing yards on 14 carries for Youngsville.
Both teams share identical 1-3 records, including 1-2 in Region 2.
The Eagles travel to Mercyhurst Prep on Saturday afternoon.
