Property taxes

Dear editor,

Now that the Tax Sale is over I have some comments. A few years ago in talking with a former School Board Member about the late fees and penalties. I was informed that the School Board counted on that extra money.

The Superintendent has stated that collection on taxes is falling behind. I have a solution that should help. The system of collecting taxes is as ancient as the Ford Model T. This is the only bill that you can let go for three years and then pay up. When the notice came in the paper I added up the back taxes for the City of Warren for 2010 and found out that year alone Warren was owed $292,263.66. This would go a long way to help everyone's budget.

There are home owners and businesses that play the system by waiting until their property is about to go up for Tax Sale then pay the oldest year and they are safe.

The School District sets the millage knowing that they are only going to get a percentage of the Taxes. They make the millage higher and those of us that pay on time are getting hosed for those that don't pay their taxes on time.

My solution is to require everyone to pay their current taxes by July 1st or they go up for Tax Sale. This system would take 3 years to fully implement but after that you would see more taxes coming in at less millage. This is a state wide problem so we need to talk to our representatives to get the process started.

Thank You
