BOYS GOLF: Warren duo qualifies for D-10 meet

September 18, 2012
The Times Observer

SLIPPERY ROCK - Warren settled for a fourth place finish in a Region 3 megamatch at Slippery Rock on Monday, but will have two golfers in the field at the District 10 Championships October 9 at the Grove City Country Club.

Sophomore Nathan Sandberg and freshman Andrew Gignac finished among the eight best season averages during the year and will represent the Dragons at the District 10 meet.

"That's huge for both of those guys," said Warren coach Dan Passmore. "Andrew was especially impressive. He made up something like seven strokes on the field to make the districts cut. That's pretty incredible for a freshman."

In addition to qualifying for districts, Gignac paced the Dragons team Monday, finishing with a 76. Gignac's score was the fourth lowest of the afternoon.

Following Gignac were Nick Allen with an 83, Sandberg with an 86, Carter Cerra with an 89, Anthony Deppas with a 90 and Zach California with a 96.

Warren was fourth with a team score of 334, finishing ahead of Oil City (352). Region champion Meadville won the match with a 306 followed by Slippery Rock (316) and Grove City (327).

On his home course, Slippery Rock's district top qualifier Brett Rinker carded an impressive 66. The round would've been ever more impressive if not for a four-putt on his final hole.
