The Jim Zavinski Scholarship Award is presented each year to a deserving Warren Area High School male and female senior athlete in the amount of $1,000 each. The money for the scholarship is raised solely by the annual Zavinski Memorial 6-6-6 Golf Tournament which is held each year over Memorial Day. The 2012 winners of the scholarships were Preston McMeans and Kristie Reynolds. Presenting the winners with the checks are members of the Zavinski family, from left, Casia Zavinski, Kristy Zavinski, Scott Zavinski, McMeans, John Zavinski, Sylvia Zavinski, Reynolds, Kyle Zavinski and Katie Zavinski.

The Cornerstone’s Kinzua Crush 16U Fastpitch Softball team recently placed first at the Valley Extreme ASA Eastern Nationals Qualifier in Cortland, Ohio. The Crush had a perfect 6-0 record during the tournament, outscoring the competition 36-5 during the two-day event. The victory earned the team a bid to the 2013 ASA Eastern Nationals Tournament to be held next summer in La Plata, Md. Team members include, front row from left, Haylie Birt and Kennedy Walter. Over 30 Softball
The A Division and B Division finals of the Over 30 Modified Softball League will be held Tuesday at Betts Park. The A Division championship between Midtown Motors and Crescent Beer will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Betts Field. The B Division championship between Meridien Hardwood and Kwik Fill is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Sam Marek won his sixth career club championship this past Labor Day weekend at Blueberry Hill Golf Club. Marek finished the three-day event with a score of 222 - two strokes ahead of runner-up Dave Andersen. John Wortman was third with a 232 and Tim Swanson and Fuzzy Merenick shared fourth. Mike Smith won the first flight with a two-day net score of 142. Scott Campbell and Dennis Nosel shared second with scores of 143.
Morgan Smith won her first ladies club championship with a two-day score of 183. Deb Niederitter was second with a 188 and Sandy Wilks was third with a 194. Carter Cerra won the junior club championship with a two-day total of 185.
The team of Edward Oil (Rob Ritchie, Skete Williams, Ryan Phillips and Jason Harkins) defeated Park Avenue Motor Car (Mark Thompson, Marty Ruhlman, Phil Holcomb and Fred Highhouse in a playoff between first half and second half winners to become league champions of the Jackson Valley Tuesday Night Golf League. The year-end tournament will be held Saturday, September 22.
