BROCKWAY - Sheffield battled through a hard-fought game with Brockway, but fell short of grabbing its first victory, losing 35-21 on Friday at Frank Varischetti Field.

Sheffield is 0-3 in District 9 against teams currently a combined 8-1.

The Rovers jumped out to a 14-0 lead within the first 2:30 of the game. After returning the opening kickoff to the 50-yard line, quarterback Alec Shaffer-Doan hit Jake Perrin with a 46-yard pass before Chad Melillo rushed into the end zone.

After forcing the Wolverines into a three-and-out, the Rovers added another seven when Perrin caught a nine-yard pass from Shaffer-Doan.

Both teams struggled to hang on to the ball the rest of the first quarter, with rain pouring down. The Wolverines pushed

themselves back into the game by forcing turnovers on three consecutive possessions before Mister Ussery caught a 22-yard pass from quarterback Shaquan Wright to make it 14-7.

The Rovers opened things up again in the second quarter, tacking on three touchdowns to make it a lopsided 35-7 at halftime; Melillo ran two more in, giving him three touchdowns on the night, before Perrin added his second on a five-yard reception.

Sheffield had a chance to score in the second, reaching the Brockway one-yard line, but was stopped on two consecutive plays, turning the ball over on downs.

The second half remained scoreless until late in the game, when the Wolverines found a way to score two late touchdowns. Adam Higby entered the game at quarterback and found Wright for a 13-yard touchdown pass. After recovering an onside kick, Higby threw his second touchdown in a minute when he found Tyler Fitzgerald for a 20-yard score.

Wright finished just 6-of-33 for 130 yards to go along with a touchdown and two interceptions. Wright was also the leading rusher for the Wolverines, with 63 yards on 19 carries. Higby finished 7-of-11 with 91 yards and two touchdowns in relief.

Dylan Reynolds was the leading receiver for the Wolverines, finishing with 57 yards on four receptions.

The Wolverines will continue to look for their first win of the season when they take on Cameron County (0-3) at home on Saturday.
