Varsity slate

Here is the slate of varsity action for county fall sports teams for Wednesday, September 12 through Friday, September 14:

Kinzua Crush tryouts

Tryouts for the Cornerstone's 14U Kinzua Crush girls fastpitch travel softball team are being planned for the 2013 season. Players not older than 14 on Jan. 1, 2013, are eligible to tryout. Dedicated and motivated players are asked to contact Dave Wortman at 688-1351 for information.

J.V. football

Sheffield's junior varsity football team earned a thrilling 21-20 victory over Kane Monday at Sheffield Area High School. The game was tied 13-13 at halftime after Kenny Early scored on a 34-yard run in the first quarter and an Adam Higby touchdown pass in the second to tie the game at intermission.

Kane took a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but a 56-yard punt return by Early got the Wolverines within a point and the ensuing two-point conversion sealed the win. Defensive standouts for the winners included Stevie Gregerson and Antwuan Renwick.

Out-of-area

Brent Benedict is an offensive lineman for the Division I Virginia Tech Hokies football team of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Benedict has 61 family members from the Youngsville area that are attending Heinz Field this Saturday to watch the Hokies play the Pittsburgh Panthers. Benedict's father Ed was a state champion track & field athlete for the Youngsville Eagles and his older brother Heath was one of the top NFL offensive line prospects for the 2008 NFL Draft. Heath died unexpectedly in March of 2008.

Jr. high hoops

Beaty's eighth-graders beat Meadville, 20-16, on Tuesday. Bailey Hoffman, Lindsay Goldthwaite and Miranda Jenkins had four points each, and Megan Wortman, Maddie Loutzenhiser, Caitlin Reitz and Rachel Cecco had two points each in the win.

Beaty's seventh-graders won, 27-12. Chelsea Wees had 10 points, Abby Bouchard eight, Jessie Sweigart three, Haley Justice two, Lily Morse and Logan Hammond two each.

Beaty's hosts Walnut Creek Monday starting at 4 p.m.

Jr. high cross

Golf scramble

A golf scramble, benefitting Love In the Name of Christ of the Brokenstraw Valley, will be held Saturday, September 22, at Cable Hollow Golf Course. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with tee-off scheduled for 9 a.m. Team cost is $60 per person or $240 per four-person team. The fee includes scramble golf with a cart, refreshments prior to and during the event, lunch and awards after the event, on-course games and contests and a special gift for all participants. To register, call the Love INC business office at 563-3394.

Love In the Name of Christ is a non-profit, donor support organization that partners with churches to help those in need in the Brokenstraw Valley.

Snow sports club

Sign-ups for the 2012-13 season of the not-for-profit Warren Area Snow Sports Club (WASSC) will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 18, and Thursday and Friday, Sept. 20 and 21, at Allegheny Outfitters, 430 Pennsylvania Ave. W.

WASSC has nine dates scheduled beginning Jan. 5. There is a bonus trip planned in March at no additional charge and a spring trip to an alternate location planned.

Student packages and family packages are available with savings through WASSC.

There is a bumper sticker with every package, as well as discounts available at area/regional snow sports businesses.
