ERIE - District 10 powerhouse Mercyhurst Prep was at its best Thursday, defeating the Warren girls tennis team, 5-0, at the Pennbriar Athletic Club.
"Mercyhurst has a great squad and they always play tough indoors at (Pennbriar)," said Warren coach Norm Dziendziel. "To our girls' credit, they all had a solid game plan and tried to execute. We just lost the match."
Lauren Beach, Corie Eckman and Cassie Johnson were all defeated in straight sets by their Lakers opposition. Of the three, only Eckman was able to win a game, losing 6-1, 6-1 to the Lakers' Brittany McBride. Katie Elia (first singles) and Catlyn Schantz (third singles) were 6-0, 6-0 winners.
"It's matches of this quality that are going to make us a better team," said Warren assistant coach Jeff Bartsch. "With each tough match, our team makes small strides forward in our confidence and game plan execution."
The doubles duos of Tyler Dziendziel and Morgan Genberg and Shoshanna Ochocki and Kim Parroccini also suffered setbacks. Dziendziel and Genberg were beat 6-0, 6-0 by Chelsea Czenewski and Emily Kulesza and Ochocki and Parroccini were beat 6-0, 6-1 by Taylor Levinson and Nicole Freeman.
Warren (2-2) will try for its third win of the season Tuesday when it hosts McDowell.
