Charles William "Bill" Reed, Sr., 95, passed away August 31, 2012 at the Rouse Home of Warren County, where he resided the past nine months. He was born in Ridgway on July 24, 1917 to the late Ruth Dickey and Rollin Amos Reed. On June 12, 1948, he married Ruth Anna Eckert who preceded him in death on August 16, 2006. He is survived by his four children, Marsha (Michael) Keller, Kersey, PA, C. William Reed, Jr. (Alex McIntyre), Henrietta, NY, Donald Reed (Kate), War-ren, PA, and Carol Reed, Huntsville, TX. He is also survived by three grand-sons, Michael Keller (Dawn), Harrisburg, PA, Aaron Keller (Jessie), and Dane Reed, Warren, PA. Also surviving are a broth-er, J. Franklin Reed (Dorothy), Newville, PA, and sisters Helen Olson (Art), San Jose, CA, and Betty Hatfield, Horseheads, NY, along with many nieces, nephews, and his 'other daughter', close friend Noreen Wiegand of Kersey. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his si-blings, Kathryn Cowart, Max Reed, and Elizabeth Reed.
Bill was a lifelong resident of Ridgway gra-duating from Ridgway High School and the Phi-ladelphia College of Phar-macy and Science with a BS degree in Pharmacy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the First Medical Laborato-ry, working in blood banks in North Africa and throughout Europe. He served on a special assign-ment to Dachau Concentra-tion Camp upon its libera-tion to help treat survivors for Typhus.
Bill was a pharmacist at Cliffe's Pharmacy in Ridg-way for 36 years, retiring in 1986. He then worked as a relief pharmacist at the Elk County General Hospital and for several area phar-macies for many years.
He and Ruth loved trav-eling, particularly to Texas and Williamsburg, VA. They loved spending time with their children and grandchildren, and always enjoyed the company of their Doberman Pinschers. Bill enjoyed stamp collect-ing, photography, garden-ing, camping, reading, model railroading, and compiling the family genealogy.
Bill was a lifelong member of First Presbyteri-an Church of Ridgway, where he served as a ruling elder, among many other capacities. He was a 60-year member and past president of the Ridgway Lions Club, and was a Mel-vin Jones Fellow, a charter member of the Montmoren-ci Fire Company, where he served as secretary for many years, a life member and past president of the Elk County Historical So-ciety, the Ridgway Library Association, a Master Ma-son with the Free and Ac-cepted Masons of Pennsyl-vania, the International Order of Odd Fellows, and many other organizations.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sep-tember 23, at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 119 Center Street, Ridg-way, PA. Memorials may be made to the Ruth Reed Nursing Scholarship Fund, Elk County Community Foundation, PO Box 934, St. Marys, PA 15857, or the Friends of the Rouse, 701 Rouse Ave., Youngsville, PA 16371, or a charity of choice.
