ERIE - Warren's girls tennis team started its season in fine fashion Tuesday, defeating Central Tech, 4-1, in Erie.
The Lady Dragons (1-0) completed a singles sweep with Lauren Beach, Corie Eckman and Cassie Johnson all earning victories. Beach downed Molly Adams in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 and Johnson downed Angela Gleba, 6-0, 6-1. Eckman needed three sets to defeat Oksana Omelchenko, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"It's always great to start the season with a win," said Warren coach Norm Dziendziel. "There was plenty of nerves out there. Our girls settled down and played some really good tennis."
"All three singles players were solid today," added Warren assistant coach Jeff Bartsch. "It was great to see Lauren start the year with a solid win."
Tyler Dziendziel and Morgan Genberg gave the Dragons their fourth win of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mariana Omelchenko and Citlaly Morales. Central's only victory came at second doubles where Maddie Edara and Ericka Hansen bested Warren's Shoshanna Ochocki and Alexis Vavala, 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles teams of Megan Waterfield and Maria Miller and Sarah Casey and Karly Taylor were victorious in exhibition matches. The Dragons return to the court Thursday at Villa Maria.
