Late-season surge: Crescent Beer wins showdown of top Over 30 A Division softball teams

Crescent Beer stayed in the driver's seat atop the Over 30 Modified Softball League A Division with a big come-from-behind win over Midtown Motors on Tuesday at Betts Park.

Trailing 4-0, Crescent tied the score at 5-5 with a four-run bottom of the fourth and took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth.

Don Cummings, Todd Mineweaser and Mark Massa singled in front of doubles from Troy Johnson and Jon Gerarde in the four-run fourth. Gerarde's two-run double tied the score at 5-5.

After Midtown took the lead again at 6-5, Mineweaser, Johnson and Jeff Passaro had hits in a two-run bottom of the fifth for Crescent.

Johnson finished 3-for-3 and Cummings, Mineweaser and Mike Massa had two hits each for Crescent (13-1). Midtown suffered its third loss of the season to stay in third place. Dave Klemons had two doubles in defeat.

Rick Eaton allowed just five hits in seven innings for Crescent.

In other action, Kwik Fill scored four runs each in three different innings, improving to 8-6 with a 14-3 victory over Meridien Hardwood on Tuesday.

Dave Smith's homer in the bottom of the sixth inning ended the game early via the ten-run rule. Rich Zdarko had a triple, and Mark Hoden doubled twice for Kwik Fill.

Jerry VanOrd and Pete Edling had two hits each as Accent Staffing downed Bullpen, 8-1. VanOrd homered and tripled for his two hits and Shawn Ristau also went yard for the winners.

Brad Johnson was 4-for-4 and Vinnie Massa was 3-for-4 as Mangione Beverage collected a 15-5 win over Blue Ribbon Rentals. Scott Chase homered for the winners, which finish the regular season with a record of 11-2.

Buckhorn jumped out to an 11-1 lead, but had to hold on late for a 15-12 victory over American Legion. Ryan Smith, Cory Darr and Kenny Newark all went deep for the winners while Smith, Don Stitt, Rich Geer and Tom Dean added doubles. Butch Johnston tripled and John Berlin and Quinton Miller doubled in the loss for Legion.
