Recycling drop-off site do's and don'ts, according to the Warren County Solid Waste Authority. The following list does not apply to the recycling program in the City of Warren.
1. All items should be rinsed well to reduce odor, contamination and attraction to vermin and bees.
2. Flatten the items to save space, if possible remove labels and do not break glass. Remove the rings and caps, these items contaminate the recyclables.
3. Bring your items in containers you can reuse. It is more convenient for you to have your recyclables already separated and ready to put in the appropriate section. No plastic bags are to be put in the recycling container.
4. Close all doors when you are finished; wet newspaper is lost as recyclable.
5. Absolutely no garbage dumping!
6. Please do not let children play on or around the containers, they could get hurt!
Acceptable plastics, check the neck
Residents should check the bottom of plastics for the correct number inside the recycling symbol. The only plastics that should be placed in the recycling container are number one and number two, plastic bottles with a neck narrower than the base, be clean, without lids or rings, pour spouts from detergent and softner jugs. Flatten to save space as these are bulky items.
Motor oil containers cannot be recycled.
Unacceptable plastics
Even though these containers are marked number one and number two, they are not recyclable at this time; motor oil containers, margarine tubs, yogurt containers, laundry baskets, children's toys, swimming pools, tarps, five-gallon buckets, plastic coat hangers, styrofoam containers or plastic bags.
Acceptable glass
Soda, juice, beer, wine, liquor and food containers. Any plastic labeling, lids and rings should be removed.
Unacceptable glass
Ceramics, mirrors, heatproof ovenware, microwave trays, drinking glasses, dinnerware, crystal, window glass, windshields, light bulbs.
Acceptable newsprint
Newspapers, phone books, magazines and catalogs. Items should be dry and clean. Leave loose and don't tie or leave in a bundle. Take off all plastic and brown paper coverings.
Unacceptable newsprint
No cardboard, pornographic magazines or catalogs.
Acceptable tin cans
Tin or steel food containers only, with labels removed, well rinsed to eliminate odor and contamination. Lids can be inserted as long as they are tin. Also, check dog and cat food containers. Check cans with a magnet to be sure and crush to save space.
Acceptable aluminum cans
Aluminum drink cans should be well rinsed to eliminate odor, contamination and bees. Check dog and cat food cans, some are aluminum. Check cans with a magnet to be sure and crush to save space.
