Dear Editor:
The purpose of this letter is to pose a simple question: why the sudden enforcement of city regulations on tennis players?
I have been playing tennis under the lights at Betts Park for years, but as of late it has been deemed illegal. I've been kicked off the tennis courts multiple times this summer by the police; their reasoning being that the park closes at nine o'clock. Why even have lights on the courts if they can't be used? Regardless, if I were the only person at Betts Park after nine o'clock, I could accept this. However, we all know that is not the case. Softball games are scheduled to begin after nine on a daily basis.
When asking the officer why softball was okay, but tennis is not, the response was that "softball is a scheduled event." Where can I go to schedule a tennis event? I'm not drinking, doing drugs, or doing anything else to disturb anyone. I'm just trying to play tennis with my friends, after work, at a tolerable temperature. Where is the harm in that?
The fact that this is forbidden but the city turns its head at the softball players guzzling beers at all hours of the night is disturbing to me. Although I completely disagree with the rules, if they are going to be enforced, they should be enforced for everyone, not just the tennis players.
