Bullpen hands Crescent Beer first loss in Over 30 softball

August 8, 2012
The Times Observer

Bullpen got the better of Crescent Beer for the first time, wrecking A Division-leading Crescent's undefeated season with a 10-7 extra-inning win on Tuesday in the Over 30 Modified Softball League at Betts Park.

Bullpen got hits from Dave Persing, Rich Selfridge, R.J. Bowers, Ron Thomas and Jim Morrison in a five-run top of the sixth inning to take the lead before Crescent's Dan Farr singled home Brian Swanson to tie the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

Selfridge, who finished with a single, double and triple, had a one-out hit in the eighth and was knocked home on Thomas' RBI double. Jared Paul added a two-run single for insurance to lift Bullpen (5-8) to the win.

Bowers and Morrison added three hits each as well for Bullpen, which actually lost in eight innings last week.

Mike Massa, Swanson and Don Cummings had three hits each for Crescent Beer (12-1).

Playing for first place in the B Division, Freddie's Bar & Grill came from behind to beat American Legion, 13-12, on Tuesday at Betts Park.

Trailing 12-9 in the bottom of the seventh, Tim Day started the inning with an inside-the-park home run, and Freddie's rallied to score three more runs - all with two outs.

Dan Boyer had a big triple, Jack Cappello singled, and Marty Swanson singled and was knocked home with the game-winning run by Jamie Nielson.

Boyer, Swanson and Rick Wagner had three hits each for Freddie's (7-6), which scored seven runs in the final two innings after trailing 10-6. Butch Johnston had three hits for Legion.

Freddie's has beaten Buckhorn (7-6) and Legion (6-7) in consecutive weeks to take over the division lead.

Kwik Fill had six extra base hits, including a home run from Dave Smith, in an 18-3 win over Club Buck.

Ken Tyger and Dave Johnson had four hits each to lead Blue Ribbon Rentals to a 13-8 win over Accent Staffing.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Cory Darr was 3-for-3 with three home runs - and one intentional walk, and Tom Deane added a homer for good measure, as Buckhorn scored 12 runs in the fourth inning to 10-run Meridien Hardwood, 24-10. Deane and Jim Greville added three hits each for Buckhorn.
