Market having great season

Early start provides Farmers Market boost

July 30, 2012
By BRIAN FERRY (bferry@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

It's still difficult to say which came first, but, with eggs and chickens, Farmers' Market came earlier this year.

For the second year, the market opened before the 4th of July - June 16 this year. Attendance has been strong.

"We've been having a terrific crowd," Coordinator Josie Gerardi said. "Every week we get more. From 9 to 11, it's amazing how busy the place is."

The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays during the summer at the Mid-Town Lot in Warren.

About 30 vendors, several of them new to the market, are signed up to sell. So far, more than 20 of those vendors have been showing up each week.

The market is a showcase for local vendors, and a spot for buyers to find fresh, local products. It's also a place where people can just get together.

"Warren is fortunate to have a weekly Farmers' Market with a wide variety of local produce," Gerardi said. It's a "weekly community activity - socialize, music to enjoy, and most of all support local vendors by purchase of their products."

Music is not always a part of the event.

"Music at the Farmers' Market adds to the atmosphere... frequently but not weekly," Gerardi said. "Jeff Howard, a vendor, organizes this activity and is also a participant."

For those looking to eat while they shop, a 'food truck' has breakfast sandwiches available, Gerardi said.

Like in past years, anyone who makes a minimum $5 purchase at Farmers' Market receives an entry form for a drawing for a $25 gift certificate. Unlike past years, the drawings are held every two weeks now instead of every month.

The wares available (with Gerardi's comments) at the market include, but are not limited to:

fruits;

vegetables - "a lot of beautiful vegetables have been coming in";

cheese;

meats - from "free-range, no hormone chicken" to the world's most commonly eaten meat - goat;

eggs;

canned goods - jams, jellies, salsas, relishes, and butters;

honey;

maple syrup;

herbs - fresh, dried, plants;

plants;

flowers - "mums in an array of gorgeous colors will be available toward fall."

coffee;

pet treats;

and baked goods - cookies, cupcakes, pies, breads, and rolls.
