Dear Editor:
Over the past weekend our President, while speaking to his supporters said, "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." He is partially right but for the wrong reason. He thinks a business is successful because of government support. The role of government is to provide an environment where business can be successful and hire workers. A business is successful because the owner had an idea, developed a business plan, convinced a bank to back it, and hired talented and dedicated workers to implement it, hoping to make a return on his/her investment of time, energy and capital, being the last to get paid.
Our president does not see it that way, he thinks businesses succeed because big brother is involved. Our President's campaign slogan is "Forward". I believe his plan is "Forward" to the end of this Republic as we know it and the conversion of our Capitalist system to European socialism, which as we see today is not working. Our system is indeed flawed and there is always room for improvement but it is still the only system that guarantees personal freedoms and the chance for self improvement if you are willing to work for it.
I find it particularly distasteful when our President makes such remarks as he has no frame of reference on which to base them; he has never held a job outside of government, he never worked in the private sector and he obviously never owned a business.
It is long past time for his idea of "change" to end.
Respectfully,
Lee J. Boger Jr
