Brokenstraw Valley Pool using ‘Note & Float’ to assess swimmers

Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool has a new swimming policy and a new summer events schedule.

"Note & Float" a new safety program at the BVSP is now in place, where lifeguards at the pool "Note" the swimming ability of patrons and "Float" those who can't swim by supplying life vests.

"We 'Note' the swimmers by using a colored wrist band for all swimmers," Pool Director Lee Bryan said. "A red wrist band means they cannot swim and must stay in the two-foot six-inch to three-foot area of the pool, a yellow wrist band means they cannot swim a length of the pool and must stay in the three-foot to four-foot six-inch area of the pool and a green wrist band means they have swam a length of the pool and may swim anywhere."

Non-swimmers will "Float" with a properly fitting life jacket, while parents or guardians will be advised to supervise children and keep them within arm's reach.

The program is geared towards children at the pool, but Bryan said adults who cannot swim will be asked to stay in water that is not over their head.

Children who want to swim will have to swim a length of the pool and the pool staff will keep a list of the children who have passed or are frequent swimmers, Bryan said.

The red, yellow and green wristbands are disposable and cannot be removed without tearing them so children cannot take them off and give them to so somebody else.

This is the first year the "Float & Note" program has been used at the pool and "there's been no issues so far" Bryan said.

A number of events are also planned at the BVSP this year, including movie nights, swimming lessons, and live bands.

"It's all part of bringing the pool back," Bryan said. "We've had real good public response on numbers this year, more people are coming to the pool, we've sold more passes."

Events at the BVSP for the summer include Blair Learn to Swim Session 2, July 9; American Red Cross GuardStart, July 9; The Galley Night, July 10; Swim-in movie "Finding Nemo", July 12; Outlet City Night, July 17; the band "Jack the Dog", July 19; swim meet, July 21; Blair Learn to Swim Session 3, July 23; ROY Night, July 24; the band "Touch of Old", July 26; Youngsville Hardware Night, July 31; Swim-in movie "The Deep", Aug. 2; Youngsville Pharmacy Night, Aug. 7; Canoe and Kayak Safety Course, Aug. 13 and Aug. 14; Diary Queen Night, Aug. 14; Corny Kick-Off Community Swim, Aug. 16; and the Doggie Swim, Aug. 25.
