Auburn nips Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers were unable to make it three straight wins Monday, dropping a close 2-1 decision to the Auburn Doubledays at Diethrick Park.

After playing three scoreless innings, Auburn jumped on top of the home team, 2-0, in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Auburn's Shawn Pleffner doubled off Jammers starter Matt Milroy to get things going. Soon after, Pleffner scored on an RBI single from Angelberth Montilla. Montilla moved to second on a Jamestown error and later scored on a single by the Doubledays' Wander Ramos.

Auburn starter Blake Monar limited Jamestown to just two hits in five innings, but the Jammers (5-10) broke into the scoring column in the sixth off reliever Brian Rauh. Rauh walked the first batter he faced in Juancito Martinez and the speedy Martinez quickly stole second. Martinez moved to third on a groundout by Yefri Perez and scored on a groundout by Pedro Mendoza.

That would be all the offense for either team on this night and Rauh would allow just one Jamestown hit the rest of the way. The Jammers finished with just three hits, including one each from Perez, Viosergy Rosa and Anthony Gomez.

Jamestown pitching was stout in the loss as Milroy, Jheyson Manzueta and Beau Wright allowed just two Auburn runs on five hits. Milroy was the tough-luck loser.

Jamestown and Auburn will play the rubber match of the three-game series Tuesday at Diethrick Park. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
