Jammers even record at 2-2

June 22, 2012
The Times Observer

NILES, Ohio - All even.

The Jamestown Jammers have alternated wins and losses for the first four games of the season and the trend continued Thursday as the Jammers handed the Mahoning Valley Scrappers a 6-2 setback at Eastwood Field.

In Thursday's win, the Jammers (2-2) used a 13-hit attack and got solid efforts from three pitchers to cruise to their first road victory of the season.

Ryan Newell started for the Jammers and lasted only two innings despite allowing just one run on one hit with a pair of walks. Winning pitcher Jake Esch relieved him, lasting four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four and Sean Donatello pitched the final three innings for his first save of the season.

Jamestown snuck ahead early when Viosergy Rosa doubled home Anthony Gomez who led off the game with a walk before stealing second. However, the Scrappers tied things in the bottom of the first when a wild pitch by Newell allowed Jose Ramirez to race home.

The visitors went on top for good in the second, jumping ahead 2-1 when Gomez doubled home teammate Cameron Flynn. That one-run lead became a three-run lead in the fourth when Jamestown plated two runs - one on an RBI single by Juancito Martinex and another on a Gomez single.

Jamestown added on insurance runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Brian Dice hit a solo homer for his first long ball of the year to lead off the sixth and Yeison Hernandez scored on a Scrappers error in the seventh.

The Scrappers scored the last run of the evening off Donatello, but the outcome was never in doubt.

Five different players - Gomez, Hernandez, Rosa, Jesus Solorzano and Flynn - all had two hits while Matt Jeungel, Dice and Martinez added one each. Gomez drove home two runs and reached base four different times.

The Jammers will play somebody other than Mahoning Valley for the first time this season on Friday when they travel to Batavia for a showdown with the Muckdogs.
