Tough start: Warren has to fight through losers bracket after tough Girls Majors all-stars loss

June 18, 2012
By JON SITLER (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Warren's Girls Majors all-stars made a couple of late mistakes and came out on the short end of a tournament-opening 6-4 loss to St. Marys on Sunday at Hawbaker Field.

Warren committed a combined three errors over the fourth and fifth innings and St. Marys took advantage to remain in the winners bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Warren will next play in the losers bracket later this week.

After leaving two on in the second inning, the hosts jumped out to a lead with a two-run top of the third. Warren pitcher Maddie Loutzenhiser helped her own cause with a two-out triple to score her sister, Margo Loutzenhiser. Rachel Wilson followed with an RBI triple for a 2-0 lead.

Warren led 2-0, but dropped its all-star opener, 6-4, to move to the losers bracket of the 11-12-year-old tourney.

St. Marys tied the score in the bottom half of the third with a two-out two-run triple by Morgan Krug.

A two-out RBI hit in the fourth gave St. Marys a 3-2 lead. An infield error - the second of the inning - upped the St. Marys lead to 4-2.

Warren got out of a bases-loaded, out-out jam when Maddie Loutzenhiser fielded a grounder, threw to catcher Margo Loutzenhiser who fired to first for the double play.

Warren wore its hitting shoes again in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 4-4. Wilson added her second two-out RBI triple before Taige Honhart plated her with a base hit up the middle to tie the game again.

A throwing error gave St. Marys the lead in the bottom of the fifth before Rachelle Armanini had her second two-out RBI hit of the game for a 6-4 lead.

Warren put a runner on in the top of the sixth before she was doubled up on a line drive to right.

Loutzenhiser was the tough-luck losing pitcher, striking out nine - with just two walks - in five innings. Bauer struck out 12 with six walks for St. Marys.

Armanini and Olivia Catalone were each 2-for-3 for St. Marys, and Wilson was 2-for-3 with two triples and two RBI for Warren.
