The Salvation Army's red kettles and the bell ringers are a familiar sight in the winter.
Now the expanding need of the Salvation Army's services has led to a new fundraising opportunity called "Christmas in July."
"This new fundraising venture will help us with the expanding services that we are experiencing at this time," Major Ron Starnes, commanding officer of the Salvation Army in Warren, said. "We are seeing an increase in families who are using our soup kitchen, our food pantry, and our assistance programs. Having the kettles out will remind people that their change helps meet real needs in our county."

Starnes said "Christmas in July" is a new but necessary step to address the growing need in the county for assistance programs such as the soup kitchen and food pantry.
"The numbers are going up," he said. "We're just trying to help as many people as possible."
Beginning Thursday, July 12 through Saturday, July 14, and Aug. 2 through Aug. 4, five red kettles will be placed around town at Thorne's Bi-Lo, Warren Shurfine, The Plaza Restaurant, Country Fair in Pleasant Township, Northwest Savings Bank in North Warren and The Peppermill restaurant.
"We want to thank each of these companies for allowing us the opportunity to stand at their establishment. You will see clubs, organizations, and individuals who will donate their time to help the Army out," Starnes said. "Please give your change and help those who are in need this summer. Warren has always been a community-minded town. I believe that the community will give to help their neighbors."
