WCSD busy in summer

Learning doesn’t stop with June

Warren County School District still offers a variety of activities during summer vacation.

Amanda Hetrick, director of secondary education, said one of them is the 21st Century Summer Tutoring Program. It is opened to students who are entering third grade, she said, through those who have completed fifth grade.

"It's started, but we'd be happy to take more during the next couple of weeks," Hetrick said. "Students work with computer-based instruction and have physical activity."

According to Hetrick, high school summer school is also going on. Students can take health class as an acceleration or remediate high school classes they may not have done well in.

"Usually, the students failed," Hetrick said, "or if they get a D (grade) parents may ask us to make sure they understand it."

Lori Trisket, Warren County School District 21st Century Grant project manager, said there are still spots open for third through sixth grade students in the summer program.

The 21st Century Summer Program is available to students free of charge, Monday through Friday, from June 12 through July 31. The program will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Youngsville Elementary School and Warren Area Elementary Center.

There will be no summer program from July 2 to 6.

"The combination of the summer program and the free summer lunch program has been very successful," Trisket said in an email.

Parents interested in signing children up should contact Trisket through email at trisketl@wcsdpa.org and include the child's name, parent's name, address, phone number, grade and whether the child will be dropped off or bussed to one of the locations.

The bus schedule for the summer program has also changed slightly, with the bus leaving WAEC 15 minutes later in the afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
