TRACK & FIELD: D-10 track littered with county all-stars

June 12, 2012
By ALLEN SEYBERT (aseybert@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

Quite simply, it was a magical year for the county's track & field athletes.

In District 9, Kalil Slaughter ran his way to three District 9 Class AA championships, including one in the 4X100 relay with teammates Marc Nadal, Dylan Reynolds and Deonte Clay. At the PIAA meet, Kwante Johnson replaced Nadal and the team raced to a sixth-place finish in the state.

Individually, Slaughter was a PIAA champion in both the 100 and 200, capping off a truly memorable career.

The stars of District 10 Class AA and Class AAA weren't too shabby themselves.

All together, athletes from Warren, Youngsville and Eisenhower accounted for five District 10 championships and a total of nine athletes from the Eagles and Dragons competed at the state meet in Shippensburg.

Needless to say, those feats and everything else accomplished during the year left the schools extremely well represented on the District 10 and Region 3 all-star teams that were released recently.

A total of two county individuals and one county relay team were included in the District 10 all-star teams while 10 individual males and two male relay teams and six individual females and three female relay teams gained region all-star status.

Named to the male District 10 team were the 4X400 relay team of Brad Simmons, Jordan Willetts, Caleb Hultman and Luke Wortman and javelin standout Austin Jerman. Jerman was the District 10 champion in his event as was Warren's 4X400 relay team for the second straight season. Simmon's name was included in the list despite Tanner Rosenberg running with the team at the District 10 Class AAA Championships in May.

For the girls, recent Youngsville graduate Cassi Swartzbaugh was the lone county female competitor listed in the D-10 all-stars. Swartzbaugh broke the school record in the 300 hurdles and was also the District 10 Class AA champion in the event.

The region all-star teams were loaded with county talent. For the boys, three Warren individuals and two Dragons relay teams were awarded first-team honors.

Rosenberg was a first-teamer in the 400, Simmons a first-teamer in the 1600 and Wortman a first-teamer in the 300 hurdles. The 4X400 Region 3 first-team squad listed the names of Wortman, Hultman, Willetts and Rosenberg and the first-team 4X800 relay squad included Hultman, Christian Harrington, Simmons and Rosenberg.

The second-team included four Warren athletes, two Eisenhower boys and Youngsville PIAA qualifier Rocco Gatta. Gatta qualified for states in the 400 and was awarded second-team status in the event. Eisenhower's second-teamers included Jake VanHouten in the long jump and Ben Perkins in the pole vault.

The Dragons' second-team selections were Hultman in the 800, Mark Davis and Nathan Zigler in the high jump and Jerman in the javelin. Zigler earned another second-team selection in the long jump.

The Lady Dragons had plenty of all-star success to boast of with a pair of individuals and all three-relay teams landing on the first team. Ellis Beardsley, a District 10 champion in the 800 and 1600, was a first-team region all-star in the 800 while teammate Sabrina Anderson was included in the 400.

The relay teams of Brooke Armanini, Kaitlyn Levesque, Casey Kulka and Anderson (4X100), Beardsley, Anna Falvo, Anderson and Paige Rimer (4X400) and Falvo, Beardsley, Rimer and Megan Smoulder (4X800) were all awarded first-team status.

Youngsville's Cassi Swartzbaugh was the county's other Region 3 first-team all-star with her inclusion in the 300 hurdles.

Swartzbaugh was named to the second-team in the 100 hurdles and younger sister Abbie Swartzbaugh was a second-teamer in the 300 hurdles, giving the Swartzbaughs a family sweep in the region's 300 hurdles all-stars. Senior Lexi Robinault closed out a strong career for Youngsville by gaining a second-team region nod in the 400.

Warren also added three additional team members to the Region 3 second-team with Beardsley being named in the 1600, Anderson in the 200 and Rimer in the 800.
