Accountability

June 8, 2012
The Times Observer

Dear Editor:

I sincerely hope that the following information and numbers will stir up some strong feelings for change in the Warren County School District. The numbers that follow do not include the superintendent.

I requested mileage paid to all principals, assistant principals and central office directors plus a list of salaries paid to the same. What I found was quite interesting. Bear in mind that this is Warren County..not a very well paid employment area.

I have a list of 18 principals and assistant principals. I added their respective salaries together as of 8/8/2011 and divided the total of $1,283,666 by 18 and got an average salary of $71,315. That is a really nice paycheck for this area. Add in the mileage paid from 8/9/11 thru 2/14/12 of $14,481 and benefits and I would guess they are making over $100,000 each!! By the way, out of that mileage figure for those 18..four submitted mileage to attend sports games and dances. What??

Now on to the Directors. With the seven I have lists for, we have a total of $582,613 in salaries as of 8/8/11 which is an average of $83,230. Again, a really nice paycheck for being in Warren County. They turned in mileage of $5,591 from 8/9/11 thru 2/14/12. Well over $100,000 each with benefits.

My point of this letter is that you would think that given the critical times the School District is facing and the amount of pay these 25 people are receiving, that maybe they could skip the mileage that totaled over $20,000. That might have bought a few textbooks for the kids.

As the old saying goes, "Every little bit helps."

Respectfully,

Cheryl A. Miles

Former County Auditor
