TRACK & FIELD: Eagles soar

Swartzbaugh D-10 champ in 300 hurdles, Gatta PIAA qualifier in 400

May 21, 2012
By MITCHELL WILSTON (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

A year ago, Youngsville record-holder Cassi Swartzbaugh fell in the final stretch of the 300-meter hurdles at the District 10 Class AA Track and Field Championships. She finished in fourth, but lost out on a trip to states.

This year was a different story.

Swartzbaugh cruised through the 300 hurdles with a blazing time of 45.86 seconds to secure a District 10 title and the coveted trip to states.

Sweet redemption
A year after falling in the final stretch of the 300-meter hurdles, Youngsville’s Cassi Swartzbaugh, right, stands on top of the podium having earned a gold medal, a trip to states — and a big smile — after winning the girls 300-meter hurdles event at the District 10 Class AA Track and Field Championships Saturday at Hickory High School.

"It feels so good. I'm so glad I finally made it," said Swartzbaugh.

She said she thought "a little bit" about last year's race before this year's.

"It was definitely in the back of my mind," she said. "I tried to keep it in the back."

Her plan was simple - just do what coach told her.

"Coach (John Victor) told me to do my best, that's what I did," said Swartzbaugh. "We're going to stick with what we've been doing. It's worked out pretty well."

Swartzbaugh won't have to make the trip to states alone. The boys team also has a state qualifier.

Rocco Gatta didn't let seedings dictate his performance. Going into the weekend seeded fourth in the 400 event, Gatta exceeded expectations with a second-place finish that sends him to states.

"That's what we were going for," said Youngsville girls coach John Victor. "He had his eyes on the prize. He had to dig deep at the end there. It was close."

After finishing the 100-meter dash in fifth, Gatta could focus his energy on his best event.

"I wanted the 100 event to be a warm up for the 400. It's been my best event all season," said Gatta.

The competition at the district level made it easier for Gatta to dig deep.

"It's better competition here. You have people to chase down," he said.

Youngsville boys coach Jeff Manelick said he knew his speedster had a state qualifying run in him.

"Just based on his splits in the 4X400 relay last year, I knew he could get it done," said Manelick. "He was able to get out quickly, work at his pace and pass some of those guys down the stretch who ran out ahead of him early. He looked really good out there."

Going into the weekend with only one athlete seeded, a young Eisenhower squad came away with several surprises.

With nearly all of Eisenhower's district competitors being underclassmen, Eisenhower boys coach David Bauer said next year's team will have "big expectations."

Jake VanHouten built on a season of improvement to come out with three top-eight performances. VanHouten's best effort was a solid third in the triple jump where he cleared 42 feet, four and one-half inches.

VanHouten didn't stop there going on to place sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, four and one-half inches and seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.91 seconds.

"We were hoping he would jump 20 feet today, but then he jumped 20'4, which was good enough for a medal," said Bauer. "It was a really big day for him."

Ike assistant boys coach Ryan Hoffman summed up the sentiment that the Knights went into the meet with.

"I told them all, we just want personal bests," said Hoffman. "As coaches, do we want medals? Sure. But the personal bests are more important."

Also finishing among the top eight on Saturday was Ike's 200-meter dash standout Matt Eernisse. Eernisse was solid in the event, finishing with a time of 23.92 seconds.

The Eisenhower girls team also saw plenty of personal bests on Saturday.

"We're very happy, very excited with our day," said Ike girls coach Mike Logue. "Everything we've run has been a personal best."

The personal bests weren't just a matter of shaving a few seconds off. Plenty of the personal bests were shattered.

"Our 4X800 team cut 40 seconds off today," said Logue. "They finished ninth and almost medaled."

Bizz Baran, the team's lone medalwinner, also ran a personal-best to earn her seventh-place spot on the podium in the 400.

"She ran a 1:03 - her best time ever," said Logue.

With the temperature reaching 92 degrees on the track, compromises had to be made in terms of what events the girls participated in.

"The weather's tough," said Logue. "We pulled Baran out of the 800 to save her for the 4X400 relay. All season we've been talking about the team mentality and when I asked her which event she wanted to run, she said the 4X4 - for the team."

In addition to Swartzbaugh's winning performance in the 300 hurdles, the Lady Eagles also got an eighth-place run out of their 4X400 relay team. That squad consisted of Lexi Robinault, Abbie Swartzbaugh, Mallory Eastman and Cassi Swartzbaugh.

The Eagles' Gatta and Swartzbaugh will join Warren's Ellis Beardsley, Sabrina Anderson, Austin Jerman and 4X400 relay team of Luke Wortman, Jordan Willetts, Caleb Hultman and Tanner Rosenberg and Sheffield's Kalil Slaughter and 4X100 relay team of Slaughter, Dylan Reynolds, Marc Nadal and Deonte Clay at the PIAA Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
