TRACK & FIELD: Slaughter, 4X100 relay blast records at Northern Tier meet

May 14, 2012
The Times Observer

PORT ALLEGANY - For most teams, it would be a monumental, once in a lifetime kind of day.

For the Sheffield boys track team, it was just another day at the office.

Kalil Slaughter set new Northern Tier League Meet records in both the 100 and 200 and the 4X100 relay team of Slaughter, Deonte Clay, Kwante Johnson and Dylan Reynolds set a new meet, school and Warren County record during a sterling second-place team performance Saturday at Port Allegany High School.

Only the host Gators scored more team points than Sheffield's 104. Port Allegany finished with 142 points on its home track.

But that couldn't take away from the accomplishments of Sheffield on this day.

The 4X100 team of the Wolverines didn't just break the meet record - they destroyed it. Slaughter, Clay, Johnson and Reynolds crossed the finish line in 43.78 seconds. The winning time was 1.7 seconds faster than the meet record set by Smethport in 1999.

Slaughter continued the record setting day in both the 100 and 200. In winning the 100 in a time of 11.07 seconds, Slaughter broke his own meet record set a season ago. His winning 200 time of 22.30 seconds broke by half a second the record set in 1998 by Smethport's Mike Dodge. For good measure, Slaughter added a victory in the long jump, clearing 20 feet and one-half inch.

Slaughter was just part of Sheffield's success in the 100 as teammates Johnson and Clay made it a 1-2-3 sweep with second and third-place finishes respectively. Johnson and Clay were also among the top four finishers in the 200 with Johnson clocking in third at 24.03 and Clay fourth at 25.16.

Reynolds finished just behind Slaughter in the long jump, taking second with a jump of 19 feet and one inch. Teammate Evan Jamison also had great success in the jumping events, placing fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump.

Hurdles standout Steve Dendy executed two top-five finishes in the hurdles, placing third in the 300 (47.4) and fifth in the 110 (19.28). Sheffield's other on track placewinning effort was Shequan Wright's fifth-place showing in the 800.

The remainder of Sheffield's top-six finishers came in field events. Shaquille Cousins was third in the shot (42' 1/2) and sixth in the discus (113'1), George Fitch was fourth in the javelin (143'4) and fifth in the discus (116'9) and Hunter Jones was sixth in the shot (40'2 1/2).

The Wolverines' 4X800 relay team of Dendy, Jones, Ryan Johnston and Wright earned a fifth for Sheffield in 9:36.20.

For the Lady Wolverines, freshman Jen Isenberg led the charge with three placewinning efforts. Her best was a third place in the high jump where she successfully cleared four feet, seven inches. Isenberg later added a fourth in the javelin and a sixth in the discus.

Morgan Leichtenberger and Jade Moore each placed in two events. Moore was third in the long jump with a 13 feet, nine inch leap and fourth in the triple jump (26'10). Leichtenberger placed fifth in the 100 hurdles (18.63) and sixth in the triple jump (26'6).

Tierra Hansen delivered a strong showing in the shot put, placing an impressive third by throwing 27 feet and six and one-quarter inches.

The Wolverines have four practice days remaining to prepare for the biggest test of the track & field season. The District 9 Class AA Track & Field Championships are scheduled for Friday at Clarion University.
