ERIE - Warren Area High School junior Shane Burns won the District 10 Class AA Singles Championship in high school boys tennis on Monday. Burns, 19-3 overall on the season and the No. 2 seed in the 39-player tournament, defeated top-seeded Chad Ferguson, of Greenville, 6-3, 7-5, at the indoor Pennbriar Club.
Burns automatically advances to the PIAA singles tournament May 25 and 26 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
This is the first time the Dragons had three of the four semifinalists in the D-10 Singles Championships, Warren coach Jeff Bartsch said after Saturday's rounds of tennis. Burns had lost to Ferguson recently at the Tri-Country Tennis Tournament in Sharon, thus was seeded below Ferguson at districts.
The last time a Dragon was in the D-10 singles final was back in 2007 when Jeff Nuhfer won the singles championship.
