BOYS TENNIS: Dragons dominate in Doubles Invitational

April 30, 2012
The Times Observer

The Warren boys tennis team hosted the Warren Doubles Invitational Saturday at Betts Park. Competing against teams from Olean, N.Y. and Elk County Catholic, Dragons players were dominant throughout the day.

"Having great weather, this was a fun event for doubles players as we had teams from Olean, NY and Elk County Catholic," said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. "Two teams from Warren in each division enabled us to utilize every player on the Dragon squad."

Warren dominated the top two flights of doubles with four finalists and Olean High School owned bragging rights of the third, fourth and fifth doubles championships. Warren players won 20 of the 30 awards presented with two first-place finishes, five second-place finishes and three thirds.

In top doubles, Warren had both the winning and runner-up teams. Matt Sandberg and Shane Burns opened with an 8-1 victory over Elk County Catholic's Ben Wortman and Shane Mancuso before clipping their Olean competition, 8-6, in the second round.

Warren's other pair in the division, Grayson Foley and Nathan Sandberg, opened with a thrilling, comeback 9-7 victory before winning 8-3 in the second round. In the finals, Matt Sandberg and Burns were able to defeat Nathan Sandberg and Foley, 8-3.

The second doubles division was again an all-Warren affair with Dragons sweeping the top two spots. In the finals, the team of Thomas Pellegrino and Drew Lobdell was able to top Nick Tarpenning and Liam Boger by an 8-4 score.
