SOFTBALL: Lady Dragons 11-0; Knights get first softball win

April 27, 2012
By ALLEN SEYBERT, JON SITLER and JONATHAN McAFOOS (jsitler@timesobserver.com) , The Times Observer

ERIE - One day, two no-hitters.

Alexa Bupp struck out seven batters and didn't allow a hit in Warren's 17-0 three-inning victory over Erie East in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday in Erie, and that was only the beginning.

In the nightcap, Meghan Loutzenhiser struck out six batters, held the Warriors hitless and earned her first career varsity win in a 15-0 thrashing.

The victories push Warren's record to 11-0 on the season as the team next visits second-place Fort LeBoeuf at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"It was great to see Alexa continue her strong season and to see Meghan get her first varsity win," said Warren coach Mark Bupp. "We were able to get a lot of girls into the games and those girls took advantage of their opportunities. Obviously, I'm very proud of the way the girls hit the ball today. We were able to string some things together."

With its typical starting lineup in the opener, Warren broke out the bats in a big way.

Alexa Bupp hammered home runs number four and five on the season, Kaitlin Ishman hit number six and Jaimie Eaton number one as the Dragons scored three times in the first, eight times in the second and six times in the third.

In the second game, Warren plated 15 runs on only six hits and got triples from Kristin Hultquist and Loutzenhiser.

Warren can all but wrap up a region title with a victoty Saturday morning in Waterford.

Fairview 2, Youngsville 0

FAIRVIEW -Youngsville has hung right with undefeated, first-place Fairview - twice.

On Thursday, Amber Fox allowed one earned run, striking out six without a walk, in a 2-0 loss to the 9-0 Tigers.

Fox allowed two of her three hits on the game in a two-run second for Fairview, which is also 9-0 in Region 4. Youngsville falls to 5-6 overall and 4-6 in the region, but sits in the top spot in Class A in the region.

The Lady Eagles lost in extra innings to Fairview earlier this season.

"We played well with them," said Youngsville coach Mark Nyquist. "Amber threw one heck of a game. WE just didn't have any run support for her. Give their pitcher the credit."

Raven Rozantz allowed one hit, striking out 14, in the complete-game win.

Eisenhower 13, Villa Maria 7

ERIE -Eisenhower's in the "win column."

The Lady Knights put up crooked numbers in four innings, scoring 13 runs on 10 hits after losing to Villa Maria earlier in the season.

"Having a zero in front of the record plays tricks with your mind," said Eisenhower coach R.J. Williams. "It was kind of like a get-it-out-of-the-way feeling. Hopefully this helps loosen them up some."

Tied 2-2, Ashley Barnett had a two-out, two-run single to put Ike up 4-2, and Kelsey Repke followed with a two-out RBI single. Williams said Barnett had a couple of nice two-out RBI hits on the day. She finished 3-for-4.

"We just took advantage of opportunities on offense," said Williams.

Repke and Haylie Birt added two hits for Eisenhower (1-9). Villa is 3-7 overall.

DCC 8, Sheffield 3

DUBOIS - Sheffield fell to DuBois Central Catholic Thursday evening, dropping their overall record to 2-6.

The Wolverines stayed in the game until late, when DuBois tacked on five runs in the sixth inning, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Sheffield coach Traci Vile was pleased with her team's effort despite the loss.

"We stayed with them the whole game until the end," she said. "We got runners on base, we just couldn't bring them home."

Maddie Fiscus and Kayla Curtis knocked in runs for the Wolverines. Justine Barr smacked a double, the lone extra-base hit of the night for Sheffield.

The game was originally scheduled as part of a doubleheader, but the second game was postponed due to inclement weather. It will be rescheduled for a future date. Sheffield is back in action on Monday when they take on Curwensville.
