Don't sleep on Kalil Slaughter. It was a banner week in Warren County sports with Warren's boys track team's invitational title, and a couple of 16-strikeout performances. You can't ignore a Titusville pitcher striking out 23 Youngsville batters in a nine-inning shutout. Through all this, there was Kalil Slaughter. The senior was 4-for-4 in Sheffield High School's meet last week at Coudersport. In their bid for a District 9 Northern Tier League track and field team title, the Wolverines needed to get by Coudersport. They finished behind Coudy last year, but Slaughter's wins - on a crappy day for weather - in the 100 (11.2 seconds), 200 (23.1) and long jump (19-7), as well as part of the winning 4X100 relay (46.8), helped Sheffield's boys to an 80-70 victory. For running in bad weather, his times weren't bad at all, and wins over Kane and Oswayo Valley on Monday kept the Wolverines unbeaten. Slaughter is, once again, the Times Observer Athlete of the Week, sponsored by McDonald's.
