The Sheffield girls track & field team did something on Tuesday that it hadn't done since April 16, 2009 - a span of 27 meets.

It walked away a winner.

The Sheffield girls defeated Oswayo Valley, 91-37, settling for a split during a tri-meet with the Green Wave and Kane Tuesday at Sheffield Area High School. The girls team was defeated by Kane, 87-44.

"Jen Isenberg, a freshman, was a district qualifier for javelin, and is only six feet away from the track and field school record," said Sheffield girls coach Jenelle Johnson. "Jen is a remarkable athlete and teammate; she works extremely hard and deserves to do so well at such a young age. She has been putting a lot of time and effort into the javelin and it showed today at the meet. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes not only in the rest of the season but in the next four years as well.

"Kane is a very strong team both on the track and in the field," said Johnson. "I am glad that the girls had the experience so early in the season to compete with them - now they know where to set the bar in certain events such as triple jump, 300 hurdles, sprinting events, and all of the throwing events. We had a lot of personal bests today and the girls continue to improve on the track and in the field. It's great to see so many personal goals beaten today and the girls were so thrilled to see their times and distances improve. I couldn't be happier for those individuals.

"Oswayo Valley brought such a small team that the girls were able to have some fun and try new events," she said. "Juli Ely stepped up for in the long jump and the 4X400, and Jade Moore stepped up in the triple jump."

In boys competition, the Wolverines remained unbeaten this season, moving to 4-0-1 with a 103-35 victory over Oswayo and an 89-52 triumph over the Wolves.

Two Wolverines athletes finished with the best times or distances between the three teams. Morgan Leichtenberger's run of 19.63 seconds in the 100 hurdles was the best seen all day. The same goes for Jen Isenberg's throw of 103 feet and eight inches in the javelin and leap of four feet, nine inches in the high jump.

In head-to-head competition against Oswayo, Sheffield got wins from Leichtenberger in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Tierra Hansen in the shot put, Isenberg in the discus, javelin and high jump, Ashley Davidson in the triple jump and Jade Moore in the long jump. The Wolverines also won the 400 and 1600 relay events.

The Sheffield boys remained unbeaten thanks to big performances from seniors Kalil Slaughter and George Fitch. Slaughter won the 100, 200, high jump and was a member of the winner 4X100 relay team. Fitch delivered the top distances in the shot put, discus and javelin.

In addition to the 1600 relay team, Sheffield also got wins from Keon VonHendricks in the 400 and Steve Dendy in the 110 hurdles.

"We beat Oswayo pretty handily, but looking at the quality of District 9 teams, Kane was at the top of that list. I feel it was the best meet of the year so far by beating them 89-52, which was a much bigger margin than I'd even thought about," said Sheffield boys coach Bryan Gould.

"Keon VonHendricks qualified for districts in the 400 meters, running the best time anybody has had (on our team)," said Gould. "Another big one on the track was our 4X400 relay team, which just missed qualifying for districts by a half second and all of them ran their best splits of the year. Hopefully we can make that up before districts. The 4X100 team is also getting better every week. George Fitch swept all three throwing events and had his personal-bests in all three events. I'm pretty excited about what's to come."

The Wolverines (4-0-1 boys, 1-4 girls) are next in action Tuesday, heading to Port Allegany for competition against the Gators, Northern Potter and Cameron County.
